Self-destructing DVD Drive

I got computer to fix for a neighbor today. One of the problems was the two CD and DVD drives. One had a snapped peg for a cog due to kickage. I managed to fix that quite easily. The second was a regular old slot loading DVD drive. It does not burn anything, just a reader. The issue was, “It just thinks and thinks but won’t read the discs.” I figured it was a dirty lense but quickly discovered that it was more serious as it made rattling sounds while I removed the drive. I found 2 plastic parts and 2 small metal springs floating around in there. Also the laser lense wan’t just dirty, IT WAS TOTALLY MELTED! This is a first for me, and I’ve pulled Dorritos and spare change out of CD drives people! How do you melt the lense? Seriously, the laser can’t possibly be that powerful can it? I mean it’d probably blast a hole through the DVD’s before it melted the lense! My only rational guess is that perhaps someone else has opened it before and tried cleaning the lense using harsh chemicals such as liquid drano on a cuetip! :-o

Screwed

I went in the garage to feed tiger, change his water, fix up his bed, play with him, and step on a screw on the floor with my full body weight… Well not that last part. SO now I have this lovely threaded screw imprint on my right foot. :-/ ouch

Fun with Taxes

So today I did my taxes using Quicken online. I used them last year and it worked out alright as I recall. This year it was a bit more complex because I sold a bunch of mutual funds to pay for MicroSkills and I had worked full time as well as gone to school full time. Long story short it got messy and things wern’t working at first. I thought it would only take part of the day and it ended up taking all freaking day! I have all this studying to do, tomorrow will be better. I really really hate taxes. I’m no good with all this financial grabage. I wish they’d hurry up and make it 100% online and computerized, then I could handle it. :-)

RIP: The Screen Savers

They’ve done it again. If only there were some way the geeks of the world and myself could have our favorite technology show back. (sniff) I stopped watching The Screen Savers a while back after those G4 B@#$!%ds fired Alex, Yoshi, and Dan. That was the last straw for me. The show has gone on from then but the content was anything but tech. It’s all games, sports, crappy trivia, guests nobody cares about, and the occational crappy musical number from a group nobody has heard of before. I think they also ditched the live audience too. I really really wanted to go see a live show of TSS back when Leo and Pattrick and the gang were there. Those were the glory days. I actually turned on my TV and LEARNED something each day! I mean, that’s saying something. Myself being the computer nerd I am could watch The Screen Savers and learn a thing or two. The show also took live calls and they helped many people solve their techno woes. I always made sure my DVR recorded the show and I always raced home after work and school to catch the show in time. It ranked way up there along with Star Trek in my books. :-)

Today I learned that they are renaming the show to “Attack of the Show.” In other words, they tore down the set, ground it up into pulp, made toilet paper out of it, had the G4 executives wipe their asses with it, then reconstituted it into a so called “television show.” Why didn’t they just say “TSS is canceled and we are starting a new show” eh? Same thing right?

The official sticky in their forum says, “The show has changed from what it once was. It is no longer just about computers, or even just about technology. You know this. You’ve watched it over the last few months and seen it change. The show has expanded to include much, much more and the name needs to change with it. It’s time.” I agree, it has expanded to include ALL types of crap in the universe. Apparently a highly focused and organized set of subjects pertaining to technology was not broad enough to bring in the bacon. Hey G4, you know I watched that show, I watched the Ads. But now me and probably all other former TSS fans are tuning you out. You loose. You chose the wrong demographic to screw with. What kind of stupid name is “Attack of the Show” anyway? Sounds like a cheasy scifi movie from the 50’s.

What does the future hold for tech on TV? Well for starters, G4TechTV Canada is showing Call for Help with Leo. The problem, it is only in CANADA! Grrrrr. Why not the USA? Eh? We don’t matter? All of a sudden the USA is too cool for tech but not Canada? (sigh) They are trying to get it in the USA as indicated on this page http://www.g4techtv.ca/callforhelp/interact/callforhelpusa.shtml. I sent in my ploite request for Call for Help to be in the states. You should all do the same too. :-)

Stuff

Went to Jessie’s house today with Mark. I installed Jessie’s new PSU, DVD drive, and UV cold cathode lights. It looks sweet. We then ate dinner there, fish. Not a big fish person myself but it wasn’t bad at all. :-) Then later we lugged Jessie’s new computer to my place where we all throughly “tested” UT2K4 on it. :-) So far so good.

FotP on DVD

Father of the Pride is due to be released on DVD June 7th with a price tag of $29.99 SRP. YAY!!!!! It includes ALL the episides, including the ones the TV networks decided to not show after the series was canned. Why doesn’t the world regognise a great show when it basically bites them in the ass? Why do all the shows I like get canceled, including Enterprise? Why do all the lame dumbass shows seem to run for ages and ages while they are clearly total crap! Sigh. At least I’ll have my DVD of FotP! :-) I wish TV was less of a dictatorship and people like me had more input on what we like and dislike. The Neilson’s are probably all inbred and insane and wouldn’t know the difference between CSI and Murder She Wrote!

I have placed my preorder with Amazon.com for a low low price of $20.99. ($23.97 after shipping)
